Vatican to announce the canonization of Mary MacKillop and Blessed Andrè
The road to saint hood has been particularly long for Blessed Mary MacKillop, who will be Australia’s first saint.Maria CaseyPostulator for Mary MacKillop’s Cause“It’s been a long journey, it was introduced 35 years ago and it was interrupted in 1930’s and then from 1951 to present day. That’s almost 65 years. It was a combination of a lot of work from a lot of people.”
Last year, theologians and doctors agreed that that a woman with untreatable cancer was cured through the intercession of Mary MacKillop.
Maria CaseyPostulator for Mary MacKillop’s Cause“She’s particularly good for women who don’t have children, we have hundreds of what we call Mary MacKillop babies, whether Mary may be responsible for getting them pregnant but we know human nature is a big part of it...yes.”
Mary MacKillop is revered by Australians as a national figure. Born to Scottish immigrants in 1842, she spent her life working to help Australia’s sick and elderly communities and provided education to poor children.
Like MacKillop, Blessed Brother Andre of Canada also spent much of his life helping the sick and needy.
He was a Holy Cross Brother and invited the sick to pray to Saint Joseph. He was known for rubbing sick people with oil from a lamp in the college chapel.
Soon after, people reported their prayers were answered. He would visit the sick and travelled as far as the United States. Many called him a ‘miracle worker’ but he denied that he had that gift.
Blessed Andre and Blessed MacKillop are seen as two models for living life in the 21st century.
Maria CaseyPostulator for Mary MacKillop’s Cause“I think the pope wants people to understand to have models of Christian living, and Mary MacKillop and other candidates will be models for the rest of us and how we can lives Christian lives and be holy people.”
