President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers visits Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican

The pontiff asked about how education in Latvia strengthens spiritual values, as well as about the need to strengthen the institution of the family in Latvia. At the conclusion of their visit, the President and the pope looked at a copy of a 19th century album, Terra Mariana, which was published in just one copy and presented to Pope Leo XIII. The large and colourful album speaks to the history of Christianity in Livonia.President Zatlers recalled that the Vatican never recognised Latvia’s incorporation into the USSR and was one of the first states in the world to recognise its independence after the Soviet Union collapsed.
