How to arrive at Castel Gandolfo, where the pope spends his holidays
There are many ways to reach the town. For example, when Benedict XVI departs for his holidays there, he usually does so on-board a Vatican helicopter.
It can also be easily reached by car or by bicycle. Many people choose to travel there by bike on the ancient Roman road of the Via Appia. ;
A train also departs from Rome's main terminal that stops at Castel Gandolfo, making the town an easy day trip from the city. ;
Once there, visitors can enjoy the scenic medieval town that overlooks Lake Albano. As well as other attractions such as the town square and church of St. Thomas which were both designed by the Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
