All nations enjoy the Summer Olympics... and that includes the Vatican!
BENEDICT XVI "The Olympics are a major international sporting event, involving many nations and athletes. Because of this, they have great symbolic meaning. The Catholic Church follows these games with special affection and attention. Let's pray so that- following the will of God- the London Olympics may bring a true experience of fraternity among the nations on Earth.â? The London Summer Olympics is the 30th of its kind. The games of course began in ancient Greece. Back then, a truce was established so that all athletes and their families could easily travel to compete. In 1992, the United Nations brought back that concept by issuing a truce among 193 member nations. BENEDICT XVI "I pray that, in the spirit of the Olympic Truce, the good will generated by this international sporting event may bear fruit, promoting peace and reconciliation throughout the world. Upon all those attending the London Olympic Games, I invoke the abundant blessings of Almighty God.â? The Pope ended his comments by once again encouraging people to embrace the Olympic spirit, as all nations come together in friendly and respectful competition. RCG/KLH - - MGZ
