Card. Rouco on the New Evangelization: An examination of conscience is essential in the Church

CARD. ANTONIO MARíA ROUCO VARELA Archbishop of Madrid (Spain) "The examination of conscience is related to the danger of secularization within the Church. John Paul II and also Benedict XVI asked: Have we allowed ourselves to be affected by the spirit of the world? We have to welcome this examination of conscience because if we don't, we won't be free or even generously available to others. If that happens we won't be able to evangelize to the modern world.â?  Cardinal Rouco Varela is also the president of Spain's Episcopal Conference. His work was actually key in planning out the two World Youth Days that were held in Spain. He says these type of meetings for the youth, are essential for the New Evangelization. CARD. ANTONIO MARíA ROUCO VARELA Archbishop of Madrid (Spain) "Spain was commissioned to organize one of the first World Youth Days. The fourth one was held in Santiago de Compostela. Back then I was bishop of Compostela, so I was partly responsible for the planning.â? The last World Youth Day was held in Madrid. So, the Cardinal says he has a fresh perspective on reaching out to the youth. CARD. ANTONIO MARíA ROUCO VARELA Archbishop of Madrid (Spain) "This massive gathering in Madrid proved that the youth wants a clear and concise invitation to meet Christ. Showing them why Jesus is important in their lives. Why it's important to find Jesus and also to allow themselves to be found by Him. This is something both John Paul II and Benedict XVI have attested to.â? The Synod on the New Evagenlization has brought together bishops from all over the world. Together they will exchange ideas on how to best communicate to the modern world. BR/KLH AA GdP BR
