Pope hails first martyr as role model for new evangelization

During his speech, the Pope encouraged everyone to follow St. Stephen's example and follow a path of good and humanity, according to God's plan.

BENEDICT XVI

"Today, immediately after Christmas Day, by tradition we celebrate the feast of the first martyr, Saint Stephen the Deacon. Like him, may we be blessed by Godâ??s grace to have the courage to speak up and to defend the truth of our faith in public, with charity and constancy.â?

The Pope reminded the pilgrims gathered at St. Peter's Square that, even in the moment before his death, Saint Stephen kneeled down in prayer and entrusted himself to Jesus.
