Coadjutor bishop of Shanghai dead: spent 18 years in prison and nine in re-education camp

In the statement, the Secretariat of State recalls that he was "esteemed and respected by many,â? and someone who carried out imposing pastoral work, "and valued service not just to his diocese, but to China.â?

A ROME REPORTS crew interviewed him in Shanghai in 2007.

Mons. Aloysius Jin Luxian

Bishop of Shanghai (China)

"In China, if a bishop is strong, the Patriotic Association is very weak. If a bishop is very weak, the Patriotic Association is very strong. In Shanghai, I have a Patriotic Association, but the members are very obedient to me. I am happy with them, because the bishop here has all the power.â?

Once he was ordained a bishop, his successor dropped out of the Patriotic Association, the Community Party group that governs Catholics in China without the Pope's approval. He was immediately arrested and place in isolation.
