Pope urges UN to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor

Regarding the crisis in the Middle East, the Vatican asked for peaceful means to resolve the conflict. Attention to the rights of ethnic and religious minorities were also addressed.

President JeremiÄ? gave the Pope an icon made by Serbian artists. Pope Francis, in turn, gave him a sculpture featuring several angels freeing St. Peter from prison.

The President of the General Assembly also met with Vatican foreign minister, Dominique Mamberti, and with Secretary of State cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

According to the Vatican, the meeting 'confirmed the Holy See's esteem for the central role the UN plays in the search for the common good of humanity'.
