Pope commemorates 522 beatified Spanish martyrs during Marian Day Angelus

To close off the Marian Day on Sunday, Pope Francis prayed the Angelus at St. Peters Square, before the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

His greeting to pilgrims was brief, but in it, he mentioned that one of the largest beatifications in the history of the Church was taking place in Spain: 522 martyrs from the Spanish Civil War.

POPE FRANCIS

"Today, in Tarragona, Spain, almost 500 martyrs will be beatified. They were killed for their faith during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's. Praise the Lord for their brave testimony. And through their intercession, we ask Him to free the world of all violence.

The Pope also thanked the pilgrims from around the world that attended the vigil and the Marian celebration in Rome.

Once the Angelus prayer ended, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima was taken inside St. Peter's Basilica. A few hours later, it made its way back to the shrine in Portugal.
