Pope meets with director general of the International Organization for Migration
Pope Francis met with the director general of the International Organization for Migration. With the help of a translator, the Pope welcomed William Lacy Swing to the Vaticans Apostolic Palace.
POPE FRANCIS "I'm very happy to speak with you about the important work the organization does.â?
The IOM has 151 member states. It provides support for immigrants in different parts of the world. From emergencies to resettlement services and the fight against human trafficking.
As a gift, the director gave the Pope the organization's latest World Migration Report. A translator explained what the document is all about.
"It deals with the well being of migrants Holy Father. An issue which is very important to you.â?
POPE FRANCIS "You have to keep on working on this. I appreciate all the work you're doing.â?
The Pope gave the director general a pen shaped like the altar pillars in St. Peter's Basilica. Swing and his wife were also given rosaries.
Before leaving, as usual, the Pope asked for their prayers.
"You will always be in my prayers and in my heart.â?
The IOM carries out roughly 2,300 projects to support immigrants. It has a staff of about 7,800 a majority of which works directly out on the field.
