Cardinal Pell ready for busy months ahead of next G8 meeting with Pope Francis

With the first meetings done and over with, the Council of Cardinals, also known as the G8, have a long road ahead. Sydney Cardinal George Pell said he seesno hurry to rush things through.

He refused to speak about what he discussed with fellow cardinals a few weeks back. But he added that his work advising the Pope on the governance of the Church will keep him busy for the next few months.

"Well I'll be preparing documents to be distributed and discussed by the hierarchies throughout the world.â?

Their next meeting with the Council of Cardinals will be on December 3. Until then, he'll be in contact with episcopal conferences, religious groups and other communities to see what their thoughts are on needed changes.

"What is interesting is the unanimity throughout the Church about many of the things that need to be done perhaps here in Rome. And then of course everybody is interested to inter-develop the relationship with the primacy of Peter and the successors of the other Apostles.â?

The Sydney Archbishop admitted that one of the main topics of discussion, even before the Pope's election, has been the role of the family. So he wasn't surprised when the Pope called an extraordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops on that matter.

"The family is under enormous attack. Now, we believe, that with the teachings of Christ, that we've got something that's beautiful and that it works. And it brings peace and development and it helps to maintain marriages. Produce good families, open to life.â?

That synod, he said, will be followed by a general synod. But Cardinal Pell added that he hopes the end result will be an accurate diagnosis and pastoral strategies to cope with the family issues addressed during the gathering of bishops.
