Country profile for the Republic of the Congo

On Monday, Pope Francis will meet with the president for the Republic of the Congo. The country has a population of more than four million people. Half of them are Catholic, while the other half are largely Protestant. ;

Often confused with its much larger neighbor to the east, the Republic of the Congo is a presidential republic. Denis Sassou Nguesso was president from 1979 to 1992. He returned to power in 1997, when he toppled the democratically elected president. ;

Sassou is himself a Catholic. During his meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, they are expected to talk about the relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Congo, as well as the role of the Church in the country.
