May 2013: Benedict XVI returns to the Vatican, Pope's catechesis with children

The month of May began with Benedict XVI returning to the Vatican, to his new home inside the former Mater Ecclesiae monastery. Pope Francis welcomed him upon arrival, and both prayed together inside a chapel. It was only the second time they were seen together. On May 12, Pope Francis canonized his first saints: the 800 martyrs of Otranto, Mother Lupita from Mexico, and Mother Laura Montoya from Colombia. On the day of the Pentecost, he met with the members of Catholic movements, and warned them about having closed minds that won't allow them to open up to others. POPE FRANCIS May 20, 2013 "This is dangerous. We lock ourselves in our parish, with our friends, in our movement, with those who think just like we do. But you know what happens? When the Church is closed off, it gets sick. The Pope also had several diplomatic visits throughout the month. He met with the German chancellor, as well as the presidents of Lebanon, El Salvador and Colombia. During this time, the Pope also spoke out against the race to become wealthy at all costs, even relationships with people. One of the places where his words resonated most effectively was at the Vatican's soup kitchen. POPE FRANCIS May 22, 2013 (Dono di Maria) "We must recover the meaning of gifts, of gratuity, solidarity. Extreme capitalism teaches the logic of profit at all costs, of giving to receive, exploitation without considering the person. These are the results we see in the crisis we are living. Children tested the Pope's catechumenal skills when he visited a Roman parish for the first time since his election. Pope Francis took on the challenge of explaining to them the mystery of the Holy Trinity. POPE FRANCIS May 27, 2013 "I want to ask you children: Who knows who God is? That's right, He is the Creator of Earth. And how many gods are there? One? But I was told there are three: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! How is that possible? Is there one or three? One? One? The month of May ended with the Corpus Christi feast. Pope Francis led the procession on foot and thousands of pilgrims joined him throughout the streets of Rome.
