Pope Francis meets with Rome's mayor and regional leaders
On Thursday, Pope Francis welcomed Rome's mayor, Ignazio Marino, for a short audience at the Apostolic Palace. The mayor was joined by Lazio President Nicola Zingaretti, and Rome Province Commissioner Riccardo Carpino. ;
All three met with the Pope individually, and they all presented him with small gifts. Most notably, Carpino said that as a gift, they had made a small donation to each diocese within the Province of Rome to so they can host a luncheon for the area's poorest residents.
Mayor Marino gave the Pope a medallion and a letter highlighting his work for the poor in the Eternal City. ;
Italy is made up of 20 autonomous regions, which are then broken down into provinces. Each province is then divided into comunes or municipalities. The city of Rome is the capital of both the Lazio Region and the Province of Rome.
