New Director of the Legionaries: We want things to go back to normal

With a round of applause, the Legionaries of Christ, welcomed their new director. His name is Eduardo Robles Gil. The Mexican priest was elected on January 20th, but it was made official on February 6th, when Pope Francis confirmed his election

This Mass in Rome, was his first public event under his new role.

After celebrating Mass with members of the Order, he personally introduced himself.

FR. EDUARDO ROBLES GIL

Director, Legionaries of Christ

"I'm a Legionary priest from the Regnum Christi. I'm happy to be a priest and happy to be part of the Order.â?

With the arrival of new faces and new ideas, the Legion wants to start anew and leave its scandalous past behind. Their founder, Marcial Maciel, led a double life, tainted with cases of sexual abuse. Acknowledging its shortcomings, in managing these cases, the Order is looking for a fresh start.

"Yes, we're looking to close that painful chapter, and to acknowledge our mistakes and present ourselves as we are: humble sinners who have made errors. We now must work to be better.â?

The new director will serve as such, for six years. This is the plan he wants to focus on in his new term:

FR. EDUARDO ROBLES GIL

Director, Legionaries of Christ

"Whenever a new government is elected, it represents a new start. For us, this is especially true because we want things to go back to normal. We had an Apostolic Visitation, and then a Papal delegate who helped and accompanied us. May the Legion of Christ follow God's will. So, what does God want from the Legion of Christ? From a united congregation, a place where our members can embrace God. An Order where we can identify with God and help others do the same.â?

The Pope also personally appointed two other high ranking members. The number two spot in the Legion will be held by Juan José Arrieta and as an adviser, Fr. Juan Sabadell.

The Legion elected the remaining two directors, including  Fr. Sylvester Heereman and Fr. Jesus Villagrasa.

So this new team is now starting a new stage for the Legion. Once their general chapter meeting is officially over, the work of Cardinal Velasio de Paolis will also come to a close. He was appointed by Benedict XVI back in 2010 to accompany the Legion as the Order went through reforms.
