Pope to meet with the president of the Republic of Cyprus on Saturday

On Saturday, Pope Francis will meet with the president of the Republic of Cyprus. This Mediterranean island has a population of roughly a million people. Most of them are Christians: 73% ;belong to the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, whereas 25% of the population are Muslims.

Although the Republic of Cyprus claims sovereignty of all the island, its north part was occupied by Turkish forces that founded there the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern-Cyprus.

The Republic of Cyprus is a presidential republic and joined the European Union in 2008. Nicos Anastasiades has been its president since 2013. ;

During his meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, they could talk about promoting peace on the island, the impact of the economic crisis in the island, as well as the relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Cyprus, and the role of the Church in the country.
