Pope Francis inspires new cardinals with his humility, emphasis on the poor
Early on, Pope Francis emphasized the values of service and humility. After his first consistory, his pick of new cardinals made it clear these two values are also their own. They described how they felt about their appointment.
CARD. ORLANDO QUEVEDO
Archbishop of Cotabato (Philippines)
"Awe in the experience of being created a cardinal, as I said, out of nothing. Being created out of nothing. And it reminds me of being nothing in the eyes of God. Without His grace I cannot do anything.â?
CARD. GERALD LACROIX
Archbishop of Quebec (Canada)
"Weâ??re not princes of the Church, weâ??re servants of Jesus Christ. And so whatâ??s next for me? Going back home and continuing to be the archbishop of Quebec, thatâ??s where I serve the best. And of course I will be attentive to what the Holy Father calls me to do to help him in his mission and the mission of the universal Church.â?
CARD. PHILIPPE OUEDRAOGO
Archbishop of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso)
"We are ready to die for God and for our brothers. We are thankful to the Holy Father for choosing Africans as pastoral collaborators to the service of Universal Church.â?
The newest members of the College of Cardinals were happy to see such diversity among the group. That diversity was on display Saturday, following the ceremony. They're content with the direction Pope Francis is leading the Church.
CARD. ORANI TEMPESTA
Archbishop of Rio de Janiero (Brazil)
"I think the Church needs to be, like Pope Francis, closer to the people, so that the people can listen to the Church's stance on so many issues.â?
CARD. VINCENT NICHOLS
Archbishop of Westminster (UK)
"I think Pope Francis knows what heâ??s doing. I think when he uses the phrase to be a poor Church, heâ??s meaning that we have to recognize our own poverty, and he talks about it constantly, our own poverty against the Lord."
CARD. JEAN-PIERRE KUTWA
Archbishop of Abidjan (Ivory Coast)
"The vision for the Church's future will be to give the Church importance, in a world where people are distancing themselves from God. With people distancing themselves today, the Church needs to be more credible, to be a stronger witness.â?
Another unanimous feeling among the group was the joy at seeing Pope emeritus Benedict XVI at the ceremony. Few said had the chance to speak to him, but those that did had a simple request. They took a cue from the current Pope, asking Benedict XVI to pray for them.
