Pope to Italian mayors: be a mediator, not an intermediary

Pope Francis welcomed a delegation from the National Association of Italian Municipalities, at the Clementine Hall. During his speech to the group, the Pope talked about the role of mayors in their cities. He compared them to clergy and religious men and women, in that they should walk alongside their people and their communities. ; The Pope also said that mayors should serve as mediators for the needs of the community. But he warned about the danger of simply becoming an intermediary, rather than a mediator. At the end of their audience, several mayors gave the Pope gifts, including keys to their cities.
