First in line to see the canonization... but not so fast!
St. Peter's Square is abuzz with anticipation. Nestled up at the front, people are already settling in, staking their spots for the long hours ahead. Joanna Jara "We're gonna be here all night, hopefully, singing, praying, chanting... eating!â? Betty Lopez "We only brought water, bread and our coats.â? By Saturday afternoon, entire patches of St. Peter's Square were littered with sleeping bags, flags, and people, praying, soaking up the sun, and having a good time. Betty Lopez "We all speak different languages, but we still talk among ourselves. I think a smile is a universal language.â? Loli Zepeda "It's full of brotherhood. I see the love of God in each person. Without knowing you, they make you feel welcome, they hug you, take a photo, call you.â? However, these lucky few may not be so lucky after all. Vatican police empty out and close the Square each night, and Saturday will be no different. But dedication knows no bounds, at least for these groups. Claire "We know that the Square will be emptied in a few hours. We don't know where we're going. But the goal is to be here in the Square, tomorrow morning.â? Joanna Jara "If they kick us out, like they said they would, we're gonna just sleep out there. And then come back at five in the morning again, and do it all over again.â? It seems nothing will keep away these campers. Not even dark clouds and threats of rain will dampen their mood, especially with this historic event, and the chance to see two living Popes, together, canonizing two other Popes.
