Australian Cardinal Edward Bede Clancy, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90. Pope Francis sent his condolences to the Archdiocese of Sydney, commending the late Cardinal's dedication to the Church. ;

He was made a Cardinal by John Paul II back in 1988. For years, he served as the President of Australia's Bishops' Conference. ;

The Archbishop Emeritus of Sydney, also played a key role in the cause for canonization of the first and only Australian saint, St. Mary Mackillop. ;

With his death, the College of Cardinals decreases to 211 members. The number of Cardinal electors, remains at 118, since Clancy was already over the age of 80, making him ineligible to vote in a conclave. ;
