Former nuncio accused of sexual abuse, misses trial due to medical complications

The preliminary hearing of Józef WesoÅ?owski,  lasted only six minutes, since the defendant was not present in the Vatican courtroom.

He is accused of sexually abusing minors in that country, where he was assigned for five years.

His lawyer stated that the former Polish archbishop,  was hospitalized under the intensive care unit, a day before he was set to stand trial. He was first treated by the Vatican's medical services and then transferred to a hospital in Rome. Therefore the trial has been postponed, but the new date has yet to be announced.

The former nuncio in the Dominican Republic, faces five charges related to the sexual abuse of minors and of possession of child pornography. If found guilty, he could face from 6 to 12 years in prison.
