Cardinal László Paskai passes away at the age of 88

The Hungarian Cardinal László Paskai has passed away at the age of 88. The Archbishop Emeritus of Esztergom-Budapest died after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Hungary in 1927. Though his parents converted to Catholicism, they were of Jewish descent and were killed in the Holocaust. Ordained a priest of the Order of Friars Minor in 1951, he became a bishop more than 25 years later. Paskai was appointed archbishop in 1987 and elevated to cardinal the following year. Although he retired as archbishop in 2002, he participated in the Conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. There are now just 219 members of the College of Cardinals. Of those, 120 are younger than 80, so they are eligible to participate in the next Conclave. ; ATO RR - -BN Up:ATO
