By the numbers: Pope Francis' general audiences

When Pope Francis led his 100th general audience, more than 10,000 pilgrims were in St. Peter's Square to see the Holy Father deliver his weekly catechesis.

It was a fairly typical audience size for the popular Argentine Pope. According to the Vatican, a total of 3.1 million people attended the Pope's first 100 general audiences.

In 2013, more than 1.5 million pilgrims came to 30 audiences led by the Pope. The world was so fascinated by the new, charismatic Pope that an average of 50,000 people came each week to see him up close.

In 2014, his first full year as a Pope, about 1.2 million pilgrims saw the Pope at 43 different general audiences. This year, some 400,000 people have also been present at the 27 events that have so far taken place in Rome.

Although the Pope drew his biggest crowds during his first few months as Pope, 2016 may be the biggest year yet.

When Pope Francis announced the Jubilee Year of Mercy, it was estimated that 33 million pilgrims would visit Rome to take part in the special celebrations. Millions of them are sure to attend general audiences, where they can hear his catechesis, receive a blessing, and see the Popemobile in action.
