Cardinal Scherer: Pope Francis is the Providential man the Church needed

Three years after the election of the first American pope, Cardinal Odilo Scherer notes that Pope Francis always points toward transparency, truth and authenticity to find God.

CARD. ODILO PEDRO SCHERER

Archbishop of Sí£o Paulo (Brazil)

"Pope Francis is a true man of God who lets himself be led by the grace of the Holy Spirit. He truly does a lot of good for the Church and this, at this time, is very important. It is especially important to regain the confidence of Catholics in the Church, with the teachings of the Pope â?¦ To be proud of their faith, their Church. Pope Francis is surely the Providential man for this time of the Church."

According to several accounts, Cardinal Odilo Scherer was a strong candidate in the last conclave. This is most likely because the Cardinals were looking for a Latin American pope and he has many similarities with Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He also is the son of immigrants; he is in charge of one of the largest archdioceses in the world and has experience in addressing situations similar to those in Buenos Aires: such as social contrasts and progress, poverty, crime, corruption and human trafficking. But above all, they have one major commonality: both have Latin hearts.

CARD. ODILO PEDRO SCHERER

Archbishop of Sí£o Paulo (Brazil)

"Pope Francis has established a new way of relating to people, within the Church ... the thrust he gives allows for a New Evangelization, promoting a Church in movement, a merciful Church, with the Year of Mercy, for example. "

When asked if such an intense Pontificate was expected, Cardinal Scherer said that obviously no one could predict the future, but they know Cardinal Bergoglio's qualities, and above all, that the Holy Spirit always has surprises. After all, it is He who decides who is Pope.
