Pope Francis has made his surprise visit to the small Italian town of Amatrice, hit by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in mid-August.

He announced his plans for the trip during his Sunday Angelus on August 28, and his intention to bring 'the comfort of the faith, the embrace of a father and a brother, and the support of Christian hope.

This is exactly what he did when he visited more than 100 children at a school in Amatrice. He also took special care greeting those who were suffering, like this man who was moved to tears remembering his wife and two children who were lost in the earthquake.

Pope Francis took time alone to pray for the victims, to pray with those passing by on the street and with those who are now homeless.
