On June 21, 1963, cardinals elected Giovanni Battista Montini, making Paul VI, the 262nd Pope in history.

His first decision was to continue the Second Vatican Council his predecessor John XXIII. ;

In his 15-year pontificate, he reformed the Curia. He created a secretariat for non-Christians, a Synod of Bishops, and the prefecture for the economic affairs of the Holy See. ;

Paul VI wrote seven encyclicals, and was the first Pope to leave the Vatican and travel around the world. In all, he made nine trips outside Italy. The last one took place in 1970, when he visited the Far East and Oceania.
