Notorious terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped another 60 young women and girls from a small town in northern Nigeria. During their latest assault, reports indicate they may have also kidnapped 30 young men and killed others.
The extremist group, linked to Al-Qaeda, mainly operates in the African country's northern region. It aims to impose an Islamic state.
On April 14, its members kidnapped about 270 girls from a largely Christian school. A video, released a few weeks later, showed the girls in headscarves. The group demands a prison exchange in order to set them free.
Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Sheku, appears in the video claiming the girls converted to Islam. Several of the girls escaped and told horrifying stories of their ordeal.
The extremist group also threatened to sell the girls. It's believed some may have already been trafficked in the border areas with Chad and Cameroon.
The Vatican appealed for the girls' release, while the Pope did so through Twitter. Nigerian bishops have criticized authorities for being too passive in allowing the girls to be kidnapped, without leaving a trace.
