On Friday, Pope Francis' planned visit to pray at the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp holds a somber note. The Pope walked alone as he proceeded in the footsteps the two popes before him, St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, and visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial.

The Nazi concentration camp known as ;Auschwitz-Birkenau, opened in 1940 and was the largest of the Nazi concentration death camp. During World War II, ;more than 1 million Jewish people and other perceived enemies of the Nazi state were brutally killed. ;
