According to Vida Nueva magazine, the pope has possibly already spoken about the Catalonia referendum, but it was in private with the new ambassador of Spain to the Holy See, Gerardo Bugallo.

The magazine asserts that Pope Francis probably spoke about the Holy See's position to any self-determination that is not justified by a process of colonization.

The publication says these thoughts were expressed during this meeting on Monday, where the Spanish diplomat presented his credentials to the pope.

In private conversation, Pope Francis theoretically also expressed to the ambassador the Church's rejection to any attitude not based on respect for constituted legality.
