July 11, 2014. Pope Francis has named German Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, as the new Archbishop of Cologne

He also named three auxiliary Bishops in Hong Kong, China: Michael Yeung Ming-Cheung, Stephen Lee Bun Sang  and Joseph Ha Chi.shing.  

Anselmo Guido Pecorari was named Nuncio of Macedonia and Jorge Anibal Quintero has been appointed Bishop of Barcelona in Venezuela

In India, Ignatius D’Souza has been named Bishop of Bareilly and latstly, Cajetan Francis Osta, has been named Bishop of Mazaffarpur.

Pope names bishop to Tanzania, apostolic vicar to Colombia
July 10, 2014. Pope Francis named Fr. Joseph Mlola as the new bishop to the diocese of Kigoma (Tanazania). He also appointed Fr. Luis Horacio as the apostolic vicar to Puerto Gaitan (Colombia).

Seven new Venerables
June 9, 2014. Pope Francis has signed a new decree, declaring seven new venerables of the Catholic Church. They are from Portugal, Spain, France, Turkey and Italy.

How much money did the Vatican make in 2013?
July 8, 2014. The Vatican published its annual consolidated finanacial statements for the Holy See and the Vatican City State. The 2013 budget for the Holy See, largely consisting of operational expenses for the Roman Curia and its nunciatures, showed a negative balance of EUR 24.5 million. However, dioceses around the world donated EUR 22,435,359, while the Vatican Bank contributed EUR 50 million. The budget for the Vatican City State, which includes the Vatican Museum and the administration of Vatican territory, ended with a surplus of EUR 33 million.

Pope names bishops to Switzerland, Nigeria and Peru
July 8, 2014. Pope Francis named Fr. Abbot Jean-Marie Lovey as the new bishop of Sion (Switzerland). Up until now, he had served as the Superior General of the Congreation for the Canons Regular of the Great St. Bernard. He also named Fr. Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe as the new coadjuntor bishop of Makurdi (Nigeria), who until now was the military chaplain. Lastly, the Pope named Fr. David Martinez de Aguirre Guinea as the coadjuntor bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Maldonado (Peru).

Pope appoints new bishop in Panama
July 7, 2014. Pope Francis appointed Fr. Manuel Ochogavía Barahona as the new bishop to the diocese of Colón - Kuna Yala (Panama). Up until now, the Augustinian priest has been the prior, chancellor and parish priest for the diocese of Chitré.

July 04, 2014. The Pope has appointed Eduardo Eliseo Martín, who until now has served as bishop of Villa de la Concepción del Río Cuarto, as archbishop of Rosario (Argentina). In Portugal, the Pope has appointed António Manuel Moiteiro Ramos, who until now has served as auxiliary bishop of Braga, as bishop of the diocese of Aveiro.

Pope appoints bishops to USA, France, Malasya and Ghana
July 3, 2014. Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Msgr. George William Coleman, and accepted Msgr. Edgar M. de Cunha as the new bishop of Fall River (USA). He also appointed Msgr. Jean-Paul Gusching as the bishop of Verdun (France), who will replace Msgr. François Maupu. Pope Francis also designated: Fr. Julian Leow Beng Kim as the archbishop of Kuala Lumpur (Malasya); and Fr. John Bonaventure Kwofie as the bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi (Ghana).

Pope appoints new permanent observer to the UN
July 1, 2014. The Pope appointed Bernardito C. Auza as the Holy See's new Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York. Up until now, Auza had served as apostolic nuncio to Haiti. He was born in the Philippines in 1959. He takes over for Francis Chullikatt, who held this position since 2010.

Cardinals Council meeting begins

July 1, 2014. The Council of Cardinals began their fifth meeting with the Pope at the Vatican. Starting today at Casa Santa Marta, it will end on Friday, July 4. The previous meetings were from 1 to 3 October 2013, 3 -5 December 2013, from 17 to 19 February 2014 and 28 to 30 April 2014.

Former General Director of Legionaries of Christ passes away in Mexico
July 1, 2014. Alvaro Corcuera served as General Director of Regnum Christi and the Legionaries of Christ from 2005 until 2014. After a long battle with cancer he died yesterday in Mexico. His final resting place will be in the Panteón Francés (French Cemetery) in San Joaquín, Mexico City.

Pope Francis cancels visit to Roman Hospital
June 27, 2014. Pope Francis cancelled his visit to the Roman Hospital Agostino Gemelli, due to a slight indisposition. Italian Cardinal Angelo Scola will preside over the Mass for the feast of the Sacred Heart at 16:30 and will read the homily Pope Francis had prepared for the ceremony.

Ex-nuncio in Dominican Republic expelled from priesthood
June 27, 2014. Józef Wesołowski, accused of sexual abuse of minors, has been expelled from the priesthood. Following the sentence of the first canonical trial, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith determined his expulsion from the "clerical state”. He has two months from now to appeal the sentence. When the canonical sentence is definitive, criminal proceedings will continue in the civil courts of the Vatican.

June 26, 2014. Pope Francis will meet today with Cardinal Robert Sarah, Presidente of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum." Later on, he will meet Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and with Msgr. Alberto Bottari de Castello, Archbishop of Oderzo and Apostolic Nunzio to Hungary. Lastly, the Pope will also meet with Ketevane Bagration of Moukhrani, Georgia's Ambassador to the Holy See.

On Monday morning Pope Francis began of series of audience with Horst Seehofer, the president of the Free State of Bavaria in Germany, followed by Msgr. Fortunatus Nwachukwu, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua. After, he welcomed Msgr. Ricardo Blázquez Pérez, the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, as well as the vice president and the secretary. The Pope's morning continued with an audience with Brother Enzo Bianchi, prior of the Monastery at Bose, and lastly, with Msgr. Vincenzo Paglia, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

Vatican's theology commission defines role of sensus fidei in Church
June 20, 2014. The Vatican's International Theological Commission released a new document at the end of their 85th session, to talk about the role of sensus fidei in the Church. This term is used to describe the people's collective ability to discern how the Gospel applies to their lives. The document's release coincides with the survey sent to episcopal conference on the upcoming Synod of the Family. The text focuses on ways to identify 'authentic' contributions to sensus fidei, using two criteria: conformity to the apostolic tradition, and active participation in the life of the Church.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of American Msgr. Timothy Anthony McDonnell, from the diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. He will be replaced by Msgr. Mitchell Thomas Rozanski, the auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

June 19, 2014@ 19.00 Pope Francis will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. John Lateran to mark the Feast of Corpus Christi. He will then make his way to the Basilica of St. Mary Major, in a car, bypassing the traditional procession along the streets of Rome. According to the Vatican’s spokesperson, the Pope is trying to save his energy for his coming visit to Calabria on Saturday. He also added that the Pope wants the attention to be on the Blessed Sacrament and not on him.

June 18, 2014. Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Msgr. Michael Mouïsse, and named Msgr. Philippe Mousset as the new bishop of Périgueux (France). He also accepted the resignation of Msgr. Miguel Ángel Aguilar Miranda, and appointed Msgr. Segundo René Coba Galarza as the new bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Ecuador. The Pope also named Msgr. Luis Gabriel Ramírez Díaz as the new bishop of El Banco (Colombia).

Pope reaches 14 million Twitter followers
June 17, 2014. Pope Francis reached another milestone on Twitter, surpassing a combined 14 million followers. His tweets are translated into nine languges: Spanish, English, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Polish and Latin. The most popular account is in Spanish, with 5.94 million followers.

Pope to visit Albania on September
June 15, 2014. During his Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis announced that he will visit Albania on September 21st, 2014. The Pope explained that he wants to "to confirm the Church of Albania in the faith, and bear witness to my encouragement and love for a country that has suffered for so long in consequence of the ideologies of the past." Pope Francis will be the second Pope to visit this country. The first one was John Paul II on 1993.

Decree on Sainthood Causes
June 13, 2014. The Pope issued a decree recognizing two miracles and the heroic virtues of six Servants of God, after meeting with Card. Angelo Amato, the prefect for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The two miracles were attributed to Servant of God Luis Eduardo Cestac, a diocesan priest who founded the Insititute of the Daughters of Mary, and Servant of God Irene Stefani, a member of the Missionaries of the Consolata. The Pope also recognized the heroic virtues of: Luigi Savaré and Eugenio Reggo, co-founders of the Congregation of St. Joseph; Magdalene of the Sacred Heart, founder of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God; Maria Josepha Scandala, member of the Missionary Sisters of the Pious Mothers of Africa; Itala Mela, Benedictine oblate from the Monastery of St. Paul Outside the Walls; and Uberto Mori, layman and father of two.
