March 18, 2012. (
Romereports.com) It's called the
World Youth Day for adults. This year Dublin is hosting the
50th International Eucharistic Congress. Much like the World Youth Day for young people, this congress takes place about every four years. It was previously held in
Quebec City in 2008 and Guadalajara, Mexico in 2004.The event's secretary general says it helps to
renew one's faith and celebrate the Eucharist, to receive it and worship God in the Eucharist.
Fr. Kevin Doran
Secretary General, 50th International Eucharistic Congress 2012“I suppose I describe it as a gathering of the faithful both from Ireland and from further afield. In our case, in order to celebrate the Eucharist, to be enriched in that celebration and to deepen our understanding also of the social implications of the Eucharist.”The Eucharistic congress doesn't have the same high profile that World Youth Day does, which leaves many people asking Father Doran
exactly who can attend. Fr. Kevin Doran
Secretary General, 50th International Eucharistic Congress 2012“I think we've had quite a job to convince that this is for ordinary lay people, first of all. I think a lot of people ask 'Can anybody go'? And they're surprised to hear that it is for everybody.”The promotion of the Eucharistic Congress has paid off with already
5,000 people planning to attend from over
50 countries. Once there, they can expect different events such as workshops, exhibitions, and concerts to celebrate the Eucharist.
The event will take place
June 10-17th in Dublin, but those wanting to volunteer must register by March 17.
