YoutubeMarch 14, 2011. During the Angelus, Benedict XVI remembered the victims of the tragic earthquake that hit Japan and has left thousands dead.

Benedict XVI
“I pray for the victims and their families, and for everyone suffering as a result of these tremendous events. And I encourage everyone who, with commendable willingness, is bringing aid,” he said.

The Pope recognized the ability of the Japanese people to rise up and face difficult challenges and the strength they have to rebuild the country.

Benedict XVI
“I wish to renew my spiritual closeness to the dear people of that country who are facing up to the consequences of these calamities with dignity and courage.”

When first news of the quake began to arrive, the pope sent a symbolic donation of $150,000 and began mobilizing all the structures of the Catholic Church in Japan in order to assist as many people as possible.
