August 17, 2010. The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples has reported that each year a shocking 700,000 people die because of counterfeit drugs.
Most of the drugs are distributed in Africa and are supposed to treat malaria and tuberculosis.
The World Health Organization estimates that some 30 percent of medicines sold to Africa are counterfeit. In some countries such as Angola, Burundi or Congo, half of those distributed fail quality tests.
