December 9, 2011. (Romereports.com) Ceferino Giménez Malla, also known as “El Pelé,” was the first gypsy to be raised to the altars. He was imprisoned and killed during the Spanish Civil War for defending a priest who was being attacked by militiamen. Italian publisher San Pablo has released an audio book on the Spanish
martyr. Catholic institutions like Caritas Internationalis and the
Migration Foundation helped launch the project.

“We are very delighted to present this audiobook which reminds us of the human and spiritual vision of this great and noble character of the Gypsies.”
John Paul II beatified Ceferino Giménez in 1997, making him the first Blessed gypsy. He was unable to read or write and converted to Catholicism late in life.

“He was very committed to the poor, he lived his life as a gypsy and a witness of the love of God. He had a great devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Rosary.”
This book is actually the seventh in a collection that includes Chiara Lubich and Mother Teresa. The European Center for Human Resources worked on its production.

“In the case of Ceferino Giménez Malla, we're talking about a Spanish gypsy from the last century, who placed Christian faith in the center of his life all the way up to his martyrdom, who gave his life for his beliefs and his faith.”
In addition to the testimonies that talk about the life of this martyr, the CD contains eleven songs that give listeners a better understanding of the gypsies and their patron saint known as “El Pelé”.
