March 22, 2010. In his Angelus prayer, the pope asked Catholics to be understanding of people but not solely of their sins. He urged people to follow Jesus’ example, who condemned sin but didn’t condemn the sinner.
Benedict XVI“
Jesus is full of grace and truth and He knows what is in the heart of each man, He wants to condemn sin, but to save the sinner and unmask hypocrisy.”
This address was his first since the release of his pastoral letter in which he apologized to victims of sexual abuse in Ireland. Benedict XVI commented on the biblical episode of adultery condemned to death.
The pope recalled what Jesus said to those who pushed for executions.
Benedict XVI“
Jesus is Justice personified. And what sentence does He give? Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
The pope also mentioned that the 25th anniversary of the World Youth Day will be celebrated on Palm Sunday. The World Youth Day is an event where thousands of young adults come together to meet with the pope.
