March 28, 2009 - Benedict XVI has asked to reflect on the Vatican II document that focuses on the issue of peace among peoples and condemns the arms race.
Benedict XVI "The arms race, which involves many countries, is not a safe road to maintain peace. It is one of the deepest wounds of humanity and harms the poor in an intolerable way. "
He said this in a meeting with some 7,000 young volunteers from the Italian civil service. The Pope encouraged them to be prepared to suffer for others, and for good and justice.
Benedict XVI Dear young people, welcome and thank you for this pleasant visit. To me it's always a pleasure to meet you.
The Pope stressed that ending war and violence requires a true conversion of the heart that will lead humanity to peace.
Benedict XVI Be, then, always and everywhere, instruments of peace, decisively rejecting selfishness and injustice, indifference and hatred, in order to build and spread with patience and perseverance, justice, equality, freedom, reconciliation, acceptance and forgiveness in all communities.
The Pope concluded by stressing the importance of volunteer work because it helps to strengthen one's social awareness, to be aware of the problems of others, and to actively promote solidarity.
