President Giorgio Napolitano on Saturday, soon after wrapping up his spiritual exercises.
It will be his last visit as Pope, before stepping down on February 28. Throughout his pontificate, the two heads of state have had a close relationship.
The Pope's resignation coincides with the end of
Napolitano's seven year term.
The meeting was described as cordial. The two leaders were joined by the president's wife.
