May 19, 2010. During the general audience, Benedict XVI spoke about his recent trip to Portugal where he visited Lisbon, Fatima and Porto.
Benedict XVI
“My Pastoral Visit to Portugal this past week enabled me to honor Our Lady of Fatima and to pay homage to the distinguished history of Christian faith and evangelizing zeal of the Portuguese people.”
The pope’s trip took place during the 10th anniversary of the beatification of Jacinta and Francisco, two of the young shepards whom the Virgin appeared to. Both passed away a few years later.
Benedict XVI visited their graves and that of Sor Lucia dos Santos, the third witness, who died in 2005, whose cause for beatification began in 2008.
Benedict XVI
“I ask you to join me in asking Our Lady of Fatima to continue, by her prayers, to guide us on our journey to heaven.”
The pope received more than 13,000 people in St. Peter’s Square.
