YoutubeJanuary 20, 2010. Pope Benedict XVI weekly general audience took place during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This years theme is “You are witnesses of these things”.

That’s why he called on all to reflect on the tragedy of their divisions and to pray with him.

Benedict XVI
“Today’s increasingly secularized society urgently requires  united witness to Jesus Christ grounded in a common profession of faith.”

The pope also urged for more cooperation between separated Christians and resolve existing divisions. Still he said there has been “great progress” in ecumenical dialogue over the past century and “positive steps” over the last year.

He specifically pointed to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s visit to Rome, in light of the Anglican communion.

Benedict XVI
“During this week I ask all of you to join me in praying for these intentions, in thanking God for the ecumenical progress made in the past year.”

The pope said division not only contradict the will expressed by Jesus, but it damages the holy cause of preaching the Gospel.
