Leaders of local Roman politics received Benedict XVI at ‘Campidoglio’ or Rome’s Capitol Hill. Addressing the mayor, Gianni Alemanno, and community directives, the Pope expressed his concerns over the economy of his diocese.

As Bishop of this city I cannot forget that even in Rome, due to the economic crisis, there is a growing number of those who lose their jobs, are living in poor conditions and sometimes fail to face the financial commitments they have made.

The Pope also spoke about the downside that comes from removing religion from political agendas.

The removal of God and his law, as a condition to complete man’s happiness, has by no means reached its goal, on the contrary, it deprives a person of spiritual certainty and hope to meet the difficulties and daily challenges.

After the meeting, Benedict XVI spoke to his diocese gathered outside the Campidoglio. He said Rome’s beauty lies in the city’s history, monuments, art, countless churches and cultural institutions, but above all else it’s citizens.

But Rome is beautiful especially for the generosity and holiness of all his children, who left traces of their eloquent passion for the beauty of God.

The Pope’s visit through his diocese didn’t end at Campidoglio. He then headed off to Saint Fracesca alla Romana monastery, named after one of Rome’s patroness.
