23rd. His first trip to Africa brought some of the most beautiful scenes
of his pontificate.
In Cameroon, he visited patients with AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in a local hospital. In Angola he marked the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity to the country and denounced the violence caused by witchcraft and the dissemination of landmines.
