March 1, 2013. (Romereports.com) American Cardinal Sean O'Malley was born in Lakewood, Ohio. The 68-year-old
Capuchin friar was ordained a priest at 26, and has a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese Literature. He began his pastoral work in Washington, D.C., with the local Hispanic community. He would later lead services for Latinos living in San Francisco.
In the simplicity and charisma that has come to define him,
he asks others to call him Cardinal Sean, instead of Cardinal O'Malley.
He considers himself a staunch defender of life and the family.
CARD. SEAN O'MALLEY
Archbishop of Boston (United States) “We have to draw people into the Church so that they will see
the beauty that is there, and discover how much the Lord loves them and
wants them to be a part of their lives, calling them to be part of his
family, the Church.”
In 2003, Cardinal O'Malley was appointed
archbishop of Boston. Three years later, Benedict XVI created him
cardinal. Today, he is
very active on Twitter and online, he was the
first Cardinal with his own personal blog.
CARD. SEAN O'MALLEY
Archbishop of Boston (United States)“Part of our task is going to be how to communicate to a world that has become increasingly more secular.”
Perhaps
his toughest challenge to date was taking over in Boston at the height
of the child sex abuse scandal. To compensate the victims, Cardinal
O'Malley sold off the diocese's episcopal palace and moved to a small
apartment inside a monastery. In addition to English, he's also fluent
in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
