February 20, 2013. (Romereports.com) With a population of over
1.8 million Catholics, 66-year-old Cardinal Thomas Collins leads Canada's largest diocese. He was appointed archbishop of Toronto in 2007, and was created cardinal in February 2012 by Benedict XVI.
He has been very active in reaching out to younger Catholics, and to keep their attention after Toronto hosted World Youth Day in 2002. It's in line with this work that he also pushes the New Evangelization.
CARD. THOMAS COLLINS
Archbishop of Toronto (Canada)
“We need to have the fire Pentecost made evident and the Holy Spirit as the one to do that, to give us new strength in our faith. And that's why I think the New Evangelization is important, to think, to plan, but above all to pray. To say come Holy Spirit for the hearts of the faithful and rekindle in us the fire of your love.”
As one of the most diverse cities in the world, Cardinal Collins also ensures that his diocese reaches out to all populations in Toronto. Currently, Mass is celebrated in over 30 languages.
