Catholic Patriarch: UN resolution that outlaws religious defamation is needed

YoutubeSeptember 19, 2012. (Romereports.com) Should insults and attacks against religions be outlawed by the United Nations? Many people say yes. Among them is Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai. He is one of many who are calling for an international law that would criminalize attacks against religions.

The proposal  follows the violent reaction to a video that insults Islam. Rai says, the video is not only an insult to Islam, but to all religions.

The Catholic patriarch says Christianity is often a target. He mentioned that Jesus, the Church and the Bible are attacked and insulted in movies and documentaries. To prevent this, he wants the UN to intervene with a resolution.

He argues, the UN needs to take action, since world peace is based on respect for God and all religions.

Most recently, a network of religious organizations like the World Council of Churches  and also several Islamic leaders have asked the UN to take action on this matter. They're hoping the resolution will guarantee both religious liberty and respect.
