The Vatican has announced a major decision made by Benedict XVI. The pope has named the Dominican Charles Morerod of Switzerland as the new bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg. Until today he served as rector of Rome's Angelicum University and secretary of the International Theological Commission. He will now serve as head of the third largest diocese in Switzerland.
Morerod just turned 50 years old. He has been a Dominican since the age of 22. He's a theologian and philosopher of international acclaim. He has also been one of the Vatican's three interlocutors in discussions with the Lefebvrians.
He will now become the successor of Bishop Bernard Genoud who died in September of 2010.
