YoutubeMarch 10, 2011. The Stations of the Cross, or as it's known by it's Latin name “Via Crucis,” is made up of the 14 scenes or stations that represent the moments of the Passion of Christ. However, this one is significant from many others.

Giuseppe Allamprese
Sculptor

“It has a traditional style that is also in tune with today. There are 14 stations and more than 50 statues each measuring six feet tall. This Via Crucis can boast as being the Via Crucis with the greatest figures in the world. There is another similar one in Lourdes, but their figures are a little smaller.”

This Via Crucis is a joint project of the municipalities from Coquimbo, Chile and the Eternal City, that began 7 years ago.

Between now and late April they will be on Rome's Via della Conciliazione, the main street leading to the Vatican, where thousands of tourists pass by every day. After Rome, the statues will lead pilgrims to Chile's Shrine of the Third Millennium.

Oscar Tapia Pereira
Mayor Coquimbo, Chile

“In 2012 it will be taken to Coquimbo to be placed on the slopes of the San Miguel hill. There the Stations of the Cross will remain.”

Gianni Alemmanno
Mayor of Rome, Italy

"This Via Crucis will help all pilgrims and citizens of Rome to better understand the mysteries of faith, Easter and the Resurrection.”

The 52 statues that adorn the Vatican during Holy Week help to visually remind us of what happened during those days.
