August 25, 2010. The Cuban government is going to release six more political prisoners according to the Archdiocese of Havana. The prisoners were serving sentences between 14 and 26 years and will now go to Spain.
The releases are part of an agreement reached in July between the Catholic Church and the Cuban government. Raul Castro promised to release 52 prisoners in four months and Spain offered to take them in. After these six latest releases, 32 people still remain in jail yet to be released.
All of them were among the 75 dissidents arrested in 2003 during the so-called "Black Spring."
