February 23, 2011. Egypt has announced they will be reinstating their ambassador to the Vatican, Lamia Mekheimar. She had recently been called back to Egypt in light of comments made by the Pope in January.
In a speech given to the foreign diplomats of the Holy See, Benedict XVI asked the Egyptian government to do more in protecting the Christian minority of their country.
In response, Egypt said these remarks were an 'unacceptable interference in its domestic affairs' and recalled the ambassador.
Egypt's foreign ministry has now decided to send their ambassador back to Rome after receiving 'positive messages' from Vatican officials.
