YoutubeNovember 4, 2009. During the Pope’s general audience, Benedict XVI continued his discussion over the theological debate between faith and reason by comparing St. Bernard to Abelard.

Benedict XVI
“Both of them considered theology as faith seeking understanding; but whereas Bernard placed the accent on faith, Aberlard emphasized understanding.”

While reciting his catechesis, the Pope pointed out St. Bernard and Abelard’s dispute ended with a full reconciliation.

He said when controversies arise in theology, people should always strive to protect their faith while searching for truth.

Benedict XVI
“Whenever a theological dispute arises, everyone, and in a particular way the Magisterium, has a particular responsibility to safeguard the integrity of the faith.”

Benedict XVI also took a moment to remember his predecessor Pope John Paul II while greeting Polish pilgrims and recognizing the feast day of St. Charles Borromeo.

Benedict XVI
“May the example of his life and teachings strengthen us in faith and inspiration of the road to sainthood. May God bless you.”

A road which may be pretty short since there’s talk the late pontiff could be beatified within the next several weeks.
