July 1, 2011. (Romereports.com) Cardinal Georg Sterzinky died Thursday June 30th at the age of 75. He was the retired Archbishop of Berlin. He was born in 1936 in what is now Poland. He studied in East Germany and was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Berlin in 1989, when the city was still divided by the Wall.
He retired in February, after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. He also suffered from diabetes.
With his death, there are now 197 cardinals, 114 electors and 83 non-electors.
